Nicotine Patches and Similar Products

Nicotine patches are used to aid the process of smoking cessation. There are a number of other similar nicotine products that work in the same way, such as gum and spray. The use of these products is known as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), and they have been shown to double smokers chances of quitting. In the UK, Nicotine products are available over the counter or on the NHS. They can also be purchased here

How nicotine patches work
The nicotine patch is like a plaster containing a small amount of nicotine. Skin absorbs the nicotine at a slow but constant rate. This means there is always a small amount of nicotine in the bloodstream, helping to dull the cravings for a cigarette. Nicotine patches also do not contain the poisonous chemicals and tars that are found in cigarettes. However smokers do eventually have to give up the patches.

Nicotine patches are available in different strengths. Those who smoke 10 cigarettes or more per day should wear a 21mg patch for 6 weeks, then aim to cut down to a 14mg patch for 2 weeks and then a 7mg patch for 2 weeks. It is also possible to get 24 hour and 16 hour patches. If in any doubt, discuss this with a doctor or pharmacist.

Nicotine Gum
Nicotine gum works in the same way as patches, providing a constant flow of nicotine throughout the day. In this case, the nicotine is absorbed through the membrane of the mouth.

If you smoke more than 24 cigarettes a day, it is recommended that you use the 4mg per piece gum dosage. Initially 1 piece is take every 1 to 2 hours, work down until the you gradually stop usage. If you smoke less than 24 cigarettes a day, it is recommended that you use the 2mg per piece gum dosage. Initially 1 piece is take every 1 to 2 hours, work down until the you gradually stop usage. In both situations, do not exceed 24 pieces of gum per day or 12 weeks of usage.

Ideally, whilst using these products, you will have stopped smoking
